On Cloud 9
So what does the phrase “On cloud nine” refers to? The only Cloud 9 that I know of is the small delicious chocolate-coated caramel nougat that was first appeared roughly in 1992, if I’m not mistaken. “On cloud nine” is actually refers to a state of blissful happiness, and normally associated with newfound love. OK but where on earth it derives from? Why nine? Why not any other number? What’s the significant of using number nine with cloud.
A common explanation is that it derive from a cloud classification from US Weather Bureau in 1950s, where cloud 9, also knows as cumulonimbus, a type of cloud which was considered to be very pretty. Another explanation is that the phrase derives from Buddhism and that Cloud Nine is one of the stages of the progress to enlightenment of a Bodhisattva (one destined to become a Buddha). But then again, unless I’m wrong, both the cloud classifications and the Buddhist stages to enlightenment have ten levels all together.
I did some digging and found out that “Cloud Nine” first appeared in 1935 but it was not widely used until in the 1950’s where it gain currency as a popular idiom among jazz musicians at that time. It could be that “on cloud nine” is a cool metaphor by 1950’s standard for a state of “floating” by listening to good jazz music. Or maybe it is smoke from smoking weed that could cause someone being in a state of “blissful happiness” because, well, you know what I mean; they are puffing “cloud”. Am I in any trouble for typing this?
One thing for sure, having Cloud 9 in your mouth is somewhat feeling close to be in the state of blissfully happy. Don’t you think?
